The Home Office have just released updated figures on Health and Care Worker Visa applications.
The number of international applications for health and care skilled worker visas in the UK has seen a significant decrease, dropping by 76% in the first four months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
This decline follows recent changes by the Home Office, including a new requirement that prevents care workers from bringing dependents and mandates care firms in England to be regulated to sponsor visas.
Leaders in health and social care have expressed concerns that these restrictions will destabilize the sector by exacerbating staffing shortages, potentially worsening care for the elderly and vulnerable.
The decrease in applications is particularly troubling given the existing 150,000 job vacancies in the sector.
