The Home Office has announced plans to significantly increase the cost of a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), impacting both new visa applications and renewals.
Under proposals laid before Parliament on 16 January 2025, the cost of a CoS is set to rise from £239 to £525, nearly doubling the fee. This increase forms part of the government’s efforts to fund the migration and borders system and reduce the financial burden on taxpayers.
What Do We Know So Far?
- Proposed Fees: The new £525 fee will apply to both new sponsorships and visa renewals.
- Timing: The Home Office has not confirmed when these changes will take effect, as the legislation is subject to parliamentary approval.
- Legislation: Changes will be introduced via amendments to the Immigration and Nationality (Fees) Regulations 2018 once Parliamentary time allows.
Employers with international staff joining or renewing visas should budget for the higher fees once the changes come into effect.
