Course Overview
This course is designed for newly arrived overseas carers in the adult social care sector. It teaches the English language and communication skills vital for carers to effectively participate in everyday social care situations. These include self-introductions, personal care, managing falls and injuries, and addressing mental health concerns. The course employs a blended approach, combining individual e-learning with live, online, instructor-led group role-playing. This approach has a proven track record of quickly advancing language skills and enhancing learners’ confidence.
Aim
After 4 weeks, learners will have acquired the language, communication skills and confidence to engage in a wide range of everyday conversations with service users and colleagues.

Course Methodology
Before each of the weekly online classes, participants will learn language skills using the online e-learning tool. The course includes eight topics in total and can be accessed on any device. It focuses on everyday work situations and has various activities to help participants learn, including video and audio content.
In each online class, participants will practice using the language they’ve learned. This will done through role plays, where scenarios related to the topics studied will be acted out by the group. This will be led by an experienced instructor, who will provide helpful feedback.
This blended approach, combining individual e-learning with live, online instructor-led group role-playing, is a proven method for rapidly developing skills and boosting learners’ confidence.
Course Structure
The course covers eight work-related topics, each consisting of two different scenarios.
- Introducing Yourself and Welcoming Service Users
- Welcoming a service user, introducing yourself, putting the service user at ease
- Welcoming a visitor to a care home, saying where different rooms are and how to get there
- Talking About Food and Drink
- Talking about meals and mealtimes
- Offering a drink (asking questions, making offers and suggestions)
- Talking About Toileting
- Helping a service user to the toilet (providing guidance, instruction, reassurance, preserving dignity)
- Discussing constipation with a service user (asking questions, gathering information, offering suggestions)
- Talking About Mobility
- Taking a care home resident for a walk in the garden (making suggestions, encouraging, reassuring)
- Helping a service user mobilise after a hip operation (giving advice and instructions, explaining)
- Talking About Pain
- Asking about pain and pain relief, using a pain scale
- Asking and gathering information about chest pain
- Talking About Pressure Area Care
- Checking on a service user, providing pressure area care, ensuring they have everything they need
- Supporting a service user in a wheelchair
- Talking About Falls
- Helping a care home resident who has had a fall
- Discussing a service user’s fall with a nurse
- Talking About Mental Health
- Discussing depression with a service user (asking questions, showing empathy, making suggestions)
- Discussing a service user’s confusion with a nurse (describing behaviour, explaining, offering an opinion)
