Aim
To acknowledge the cultural difference of those caring in social care settings related to end-of-life care in the UK and the impact this has on residents and staff in the sector.

Learning Outcomes
• To understand what palliative and end-of-life care means and how we can support residents and staff.
• To have knowledge and understanding of the cultural differences relating to palliative and end-of-life care.
• For care sector staff to understand the main causes of death in the UK.
• For care sector staff to acknowledge the emotional impact of caring for the dying.

About the Trainer

Dr Amanda Young (PhD RGN DN RNT) is the Director of Nursing Programmes at the Queen’s Nursing Institute. She has many years of experience in end-of-life care, specializing in care homes and community-based nursing.
Amanda began her nursing career in 1987 at the London Hospital, gaining diverse experience, including a year in Canada, before becoming a District Nurse and Community Practice Teacher in Newham, East London. From here, she pursued an academic career, teaching Community Nursing at London Southbank University, then becoming Lead Palliative Care Nurse at NELFT in East London. In 2016, Amanda completed her PhD in Palliative Care at Lancaster University, focusing on end-of-life care in care homes. She has since lectured at Anglia Ruskin University.
As Director of Nursing Programmes at the Queen’s National Institute, she supports a network of Queen’s Nurses and innovation project leads and represents all community nurses at a national level. Dr Young has chaired the End-of-Life Facilitator Network for London for over 10 years, disseminating best practice and research and providing crucial support to healthcare professionals.
Inspired by her groundbreaking research on the moral distress experienced by staff providing end-of-life care in care homes during her PhD, Dr Young has developed this pioneering training to help overseas care workers better understand the cultural nuances of end-of-life care in the UK.
